THE PERSONALITY OF PROF. RICHARD KING: By Pastor Edwin S. EKANEM
Prof. Richard King USORO was born in year 1958 into a humble background and family of Chief and Mrs. John King USORO of Ikot Ebok in Eket Local Government Area. I and Prof. King lived and grew up together from childhood and we belong to the same peer group. My family and that of Prof. King have strong ties and linkages via marriage as two of my Aunties were married to two of his Uncles namely Late Chief Daniel USORO and Late Chief Sampson USORO.
We were both caught up in Biafra during the Civil War and by the special grace of the Almighty God, we survived the war and returned home unhurt. I and Prof. King attended St. Gregory's Primary School, Ikot Ebok, Eket and we obtained our First School Leaving Certificates in 1972. Prof. King made a distinction in that examination. It is interesting to state here that during the good old days in Primary School, Prof. King was very brilliant and usually took the first position in class; he never allowed any other pupil to perform better than himself. He was also good in games and sports, particularly football. He used to play left full back while I was a right outside player.
Prof. King was a good drummer and flutist in the School Band. He was also a cofounded a pop group in Ikot Ebok popularly known asVikkon 4 in the early 1970s. The band was well-admired in Eket where it entertained the whole town soon after the civil war. After our primary education, we both proceeded to different Secondary Schools in 1973. I was admitted into Technical School, Ikot Akata in Ikot Abasi while he attended Nigerian Christian Secondary School in Ukpom, Abak.
After his Secondary School Education, Prof. King proceeded to the University of Port Harcourt
where his excellent performance earned him a scholarship while I took up a job with Mobil Producing Nigeria in Eket. Soon after obtaining an MSc degree, Prof. King took up an appointment as a Lecturer in the defunct University of Cross River State. He later transferred his service to the present University of Uyo. Due to his hard work and excellent academic performance, he rose rapidly through the ranks and attained the status of a Professor at a relatively young age.
It is noted that because he has maintained a peace-loving life from his youthful age, favours have accompanied him. Prof. Richard KING is not a trouble-maker and a greedy person. He hates violence; he loves his people and fully integrates with them. The good news about Prof. King is that he has been a helper to many people from Akwa Ibom State and beyond. He has assisted many people to secure legitimate employments. Ikot Ebok village did not have constant electricity due to burnt transformers for over a year but through the influence and effort of Prof. King, ExxonMobil released four transformers to Ikot Ebok and its neighbourhood and they are currently enjoying relatively constant electricity supply.
In conclusion, Prof. King is a God-fearing and well-trained gentleman. He has good manners and is well-behaved. He has great respect for elders and fears God. Prof. King is happily married with children who are now grown and I am happy that he has a good family life like mine. I now say ...'may the good Lord bless him'. Amen !!!.
