A programme to seek out and support youth leaders across the Commonwealth is now underway, and the call is out for additional inspiring young people to apply for this award across the Commonwealth.
The Queen’s Young Leaders award was launched at Buckingham Palace in July by their Royal Highnesses, The Duke of Cambridge and Prince Henry of Wales to find exceptional young people who have overcome adversity to transform their own lives, and the lives of others.
The award, in recognition of Her Majesty’s 60 years on the throne, will be available to 60 young people each year for the next four years, plus runners up across the 53 Commonwealth nations..

Winners will be rewarded for their achievements with a year of mentoring and support in their chosen fields, enabling them to reach their full potential, step up as leaders and go on to improve the lives of many others in the Commonwealth . Winners will also be brought to the UK for one week, during which they will be involved in a programme to include engagement with political leaders, social and business entrepreneurs, civil society and the arts community, and culminating in an award ceremony at Buckingham Palace with Her Majesty The Queen.
Young people will help design the award process, to ensure the programme is tailored for youth, by youth, to help shape the future of the Commonwealth.
Speaking at the launch of this exceptional programme, Chairman of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, Sir John Major, said: “This programme will celebrate the achievements of these extraordinary individuals and help develop their skills, thus creating a lasting legacy – benefiting the whole of the Commonwealth – to honour the long and successful reign of HM Queen Elizabeth II.”
Youth ambassador and girls campaigner, Fahma Mohamad said: “Young people are the parents, the leaders and the adults of the future. We are the ones who can ultimately change society and make our world a better place to live. We can influence values and priorities. We have the passion of the youth. Once we set our minds on something we don’t give up easily. We have energy, creativity and new ideas so if you want to invest in the future, invest in the youth and let us own our own future.”
The Commonwealth is now home to the largest population of young people in its history, with 60% of the 2.2 billion citizens under the age of 30. The Queen’s Young Leaders programme will support inspiring young leaders to realise their own visions, and those of thousands of others across the Commonwealth who will share their stories and be empowered by those experiences.
Comprising two parts, it will create a lasting legacy for the Queen through:
** An Awards scheme, to recognise the achievements of 240 inspirational young people and provide support enabling them to take up leadership roles and inspire future leaders
** Grants, to support organisations in selected countries across the Commonwealth that work with young people to transform their lives
