Sir,
INJUSTICE AND ILL-TREATMENT OF AKWA IBOM STATE CADETS AT
MARITIME ACADEMY OF NIGERIA, ORON
Sir, I want to intimate you on the injustice and
ill-treatment meted on our children at Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron. This
ill-treatment borders on admission and other sundry issues. The recent
selective treatment of 95 Cadets at the school which 95% are from the state is
unacceptable and the House of Assembly should investigate the issue and take
appropriate action.
Sir, I have it in good authority that over 200 ND 1
Cadets of MAN did not participate in Boat Watches but when checking was
conducted, the Marine Engineering Cadets who were on clean sheet on that
particular day were also affected. When a raid was carried out which is a
routine activity at the school, innocent Cadets were affected and they were
took to the parade ground for punishment (standing under the sun for a whole
day) before taken to the Rector, Mr. Joshua Okpo.
The Rector, Mr. Okpo ordered for Emergency Panel to deal
with the issue but the Panel didnt allowed the Cadets to defend themselves.
When the Panel call department by department, all what they asked is whether
you are guilty or not and those that say they are not guilty were locked in
cell, while others were asked to retired to their hostel. They were later called to observed two weeks Watch
Keeping (punishment) from 8 am to 5 pm on daily basis. After completion of the
Watch Keeping, the Rector at a Solemn Assembly organized by the school pardoned
all the affected Cadets and announced that they should participate in the
Second Semester Exam which they did and the result was published this week.
None of the Cadets fail and they are now doing their First Semester of ND 2.
Surprisingly, after the result was published, few days
later, the Director of Regiment Unit Commander (DRUC) published the names of 95
Cadets out of the over 200 that were earlier affected by the raid which over
90% are from Akwa Ibom State that they must write their Second Semester Exam of
ND 1 again which they have already passed as was earlier published. The DRUC
carried out this action even without the consent of other members of the Panel.
Meanwhile, the Cadets affected have already paid their tuition fee for this
First Semester of ND 2. This is unacceptable and a miscarriage of justice which
the Rector and Management Staff of Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Oron should be
invited to the House to explain why such a jungle justice and particularly
targeted at our children.
We must resist all attempt by outsiders to sabotage the
effort of our children to obtain skills in Maritime related field in
preparation for the opportunities that are abounding in the maritime industry.
Our simplicity has been taken for granted for too long and it is high time, we
put a capital FULLSTOP to it.
Thank you.
A Concerned Citizen,
UBONG DAVID
