Press Statement

Release date: 1st April, 2015

NCICC APPLAUDS NIGERIANS ON PEACEFUL 2015 ELECTIONS

The Nigerian Coalition for the International Criminal Court heartily commends the entire people of Nigeria for the peaceful conduct of the Presidential and National Assembly elections.

We also thank the security agencies for managing the few incidences of violence in some States. We recall that the ICC prosecutor issued early warning statements encouraging peaceful elections and we are glad that Nigerian political society has conducted so far credible and peaceful electoral process. We call on all concerned to continue this way into the State Governorship and House of Assembly elections on April 11, 2015.

We heartily commend President Goodluck Jonathan for his early concession to electoral defeat even before the results were officially announced by INEC. By his singular patriotic act of conceding to defeat and congratulating the President elect, Mr. President has doused the very strong tension of imminent post election violence across the country. Many offices were closed and businesses shut down. Homes were locked up and many city residents fled the cities for their country homes. Mr. President has recalled life back to the country and has saved several bloodsheds that would otherwise have been the story today. For this great patriotism, NCICC congratulates the President and thank him for showing leadership by example. He has no doubt today entered history as the first president to conduct a free and fair election and accept defeat in the interest of the nation. We call Mr. Goodluck Jonathan the father of modern Nigerian Democracy.

We congratulate the President elect, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, his deputy Prof Osibanjo and the entire APC, and urge them to build bridges across political, ethnic and religious societies in Nigeria.

We call on Nigerian Politicians to follow President Goodluck’s example as we go into the Governorship and State House of Assembly elections.
