MALALA DAY IN AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA

Eagle Builders Foundation presents MALALA DAY 2015

Malala Day is an important day to raise awareness and to help girls realize their right to education. It is a day set aside by United Nations Global Education First Initiative to support Pakistani education and right activist, MalalaYousafzai. It is a day to raise your voice in support of girl child education and government to invest more in education. Every child has the right to education. It is fundamental to all other development. Despite this right, 126 million children remain out of primary and lower secondary school around the world with Nigeria having the highest number of 10.5 million out-of-school children followed by Pakistan with 7 million. Of this number, 65 million are girls while there are 250 million children in school who are not learning due to lack of a quality education. It is also reported that some countries lose more than $1 billion a year by failing to educate girls at the same level as boys.

To us in Eagle Builders Foundation, we are of the opinion that every child deserves free and qualitative education especially in Nigeria in line with an Act of the National Assembly of 2004 which was assented to by OlusegunObasanjo led administration. But after the Bill was passed into law, governments at different levels have been very reluctant to implement the UBE Act. It is on this premise that we are launching national advocacy campaign for the full implementation of UBE Act 2004 with the NIGERIA EDUCATION FIRST INITIATIVE and GIRLS NEXT GENERATION Project by calling on policy makers, government, donor agencies, institutions, philanthropists, activists, human right lawyers, youth, women, media, etc to sign-in for the full implementation of the Act to give every Nigerian child equal access to education. MALALA DAY is one of such campaign as we will gather education stakeholders in Uyo, the capital of AkwaIbom State to raise their voices for the education of the girl-child. Highpoint of the event will include Paper Presentations, Inauguration of State Executive/Chapter Coordinators of Girls Next Generation, Collection of Signature for the Implementation of UBE Act, presentation of Certificate of Endorsement as Education First Ambassador to selected individuals who support or advances the cause of education in Nigeria, etc.

Who is MALALA YOUSAFZAI?

MalalaYousafzai is an international youth advocate for the education and advancement of women. She was born in July 1997 in Pakistan and as a daughter of a school teacher, she valued and continued her education despite threats from the Taliban. In 2012, a masked gunman entered her school bus and attempted to assassinate her and two of her friends. She survived the attack as the gunman failed to kill Malala or her cause. Malala’s story brings to light the struggle for education that girls around the world face today.

AKWA IBOM CHILD RIGHTS LAW

The Akwa Ibom State Child Rights Law The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Godswill Akpabio, on 5th December, 2008 signed the child rights act into law to protect the growth of perceptual, emotional, intellectual, and behavioural capabilities and functioning during childhood of Akwa Ibom children under 16 years. The law protects the Akwa Ibom child from birth to adolescence and up to 16 years such that the child is afforded the necessary protection and assistance so that it can fully assume its responsibilities within the community. EFREN PENAFLORIDA - SOCIAL WORKER AND TEACHER

Efren’s Penaflorida – Social Worker and Teacher Efren PeƱaflorida, Jr. sports no cape. He has no superpowers. You would neither throw him a second glance nor even notice him in a big crowd. There is really nothing special about Efren except his unparalleled dedication to reforming kids in their poverty-stricken community in Cavite, Philippines.Efren PeƱaflorida, Jr.’s sanity was questioned when people first saw him going around the neighborhood pushing his improvised cart loaded with food, books, paper, pencils, and other things you would commonly see in a classroom. Why, Efren goes around the neighborhood pushing a mobile classroom to peddle the love for education. He left his well-paying job as a private school teacher to devote all of his time and effort to his Kariton Klasrum project while his neighbors mock him.To make matters worse, his parents and brother did not see the point in his earnestness to get out-of-school youths interested in going back to school. For a family s...
