OPINION: A CLARION CALL - UBONG DAVID

By Ubong David

Within two weeks of his inauguration as the president of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari has received bashing from many Nigerians especially from the camp of the new opposition party which am a strong member, the Peoples Democratic Party. Many political activists has emerged and more critics has resurface the social media. This is much expected as I earlier submitted due to what the former opposition party, the All Progressive Congress did to PDP led administration of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. When President Muhammadu Buhari was finally announced as the winner of the March 28 presidential election, thousand of PDP members whose present are dominant on social media also promised to retaliate. What we are experiencing in the first two weeks of President Muhammadu Buhari administration is a fulfillment of that promise and Nigerian should not be surprise on this development.

MY OBSERVATION

While many political activists has emerged, a pointer to the fact that the months ahead will be turbulent but we need to be constraint. We should see Nigeria first before any other thing. President Goodluck Jonathan was called names like CLUELESS, and today President Muhammadu Buhari is being labelled BRAINLESS. This is not healthy for the polity as it does not only make us a mockery at the international community but also a pointer to the fact that there is no difference between APC and PDP. I have hundreds of friends from APC across the country and we remain friends beyond our political activities. Yesterday, I was chatting with one from Kano state and we resolved that we belong to one big family that is larger than our political lineage which is Nigeria. No political party is bigger than Nigeria and we must not sacrifice the unity of our country on political loyalty. Politics will come and go but Nigeria will still remain.

President Muhammadu Buhari is the president of over 170 million Nigerians and we can't change that until 2019 except otherwise. What we should do is to help him disentangle himself from the grip of some APC leaders who want to direct his administration to the detriment of all Nigerians. Our country is faced with many challenges which is affecting every facet of our lives and what we need to do as citizens is to join hands together and make meaningful contributions to the growth of our country rather than the destructive tendency. Lets us give him every support that he needed and the enabling environment to implement his manifestoes which he promised us during the campaign. We should not destroy everything on the alter of politics or political party. As you can see, the political landscape is a little balanced with the outcome of National Assembly leadership. Is not a winner takes it all as was envisaged. There will be check and balance which is the hallmark of democratic practices globally.

Lets criticize when necessary but let our criticism be constructive. For instance, the banning of Police using camouflage to me is a misplaced priority as the new uniform give the Nigerian Police a new image but if that will solve the problem of insecurity in the country, so be it.

On a final note, let us all participate in the business of governance and not watching from the sideline. That does not make you a politician but a democratic citizen of Nigeria. When you dont participate, you lack the moral standing to criticize. Nigeria democracy is evolving, lets support it to grow.

AKWA IBOM CHILD RIGHTS LAW

The Akwa Ibom State Child Rights Law The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Godswill Akpabio, on 5th December, 2008 signed the child rights act into law to protect the growth of perceptual, emotional, intellectual, and behavioural capabilities and functioning during childhood of Akwa Ibom children under 16 years. The law protects the Akwa Ibom child from birth to adolescence and up to 16 years such that the child is afforded the necessary protection and assistance so that it can fully assume its responsibilities within the community. EFREN PENAFLORIDA - SOCIAL WORKER AND TEACHER

Efren’s Penaflorida – Social Worker and Teacher Efren PeƱaflorida, Jr. sports no cape. He has no superpowers. You would neither throw him a second glance nor even notice him in a big crowd. There is really nothing special about Efren except his unparalleled dedication to reforming kids in their poverty-stricken community in Cavite, Philippines.Efren PeƱaflorida, Jr.’s sanity was questioned when people first saw him going around the neighborhood pushing his improvised cart loaded with food, books, paper, pencils, and other things you would commonly see in a classroom. Why, Efren goes around the neighborhood pushing a mobile classroom to peddle the love for education. He left his well-paying job as a private school teacher to devote all of his time and effort to his Kariton Klasrum project while his neighbors mock him.To make matters worse, his parents and brother did not see the point in his earnestness to get out-of-school youths interested in going back to school. For a family s...
