PRESS RELEASE: CISLAC CALLS FOR PEACEFUL DIALOGUE AMONG NASS MEMBERS

The Civil Society Legislative Advocacy Centre (CISLAC) has critically observed with keen interest, the ongoing political development in the National Assembly, where the struggle for leadership positions is fast becoming a priority over the nation’s democracy and national interested.

Although we understand that is a global phenomenon for political parties and politicians for leadership positions in the legislature, which featured in Nigeria’s political history in the 16 years prior to the emergence of the All Progressive Congress (APC) as the leading party in the country. However, the ongoing development in the National Assembly could be traced to inability and weak internal control system by the leadership of APC to inculcate discipline in its members.

We believe that the most recent development leading to the emergence of new leaderships in the Assembly would serve as a lesson to future ruling party to prioritize adequate internal control and inculcate discipline in its members. We demand that such development should be accepted in the interest of nation’s democracy as the matter is now clearly outside of the party’s control.

CISLAC strongly demands that the ongoing struggles for elective and appointive leadership positions in the National Assembly be conducted within the legislative Code of Conduct to promote value of excellence, professionalism in the legislators’ performance; and ensure civility and responsible conduct inside and outside of the Assembly commensurate with the trust placed in legislators by the electorate and in deference to the rights of citizens and respect for the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

We call on the elected members to reach out to the aggrieved legislators and maintain peace with their party to avert conflict between private interests and official duties and uphold effective functionality of the Presidency in the best interest of the nation.

We charge the elected and appointed principal officers in the Assembly to constructively dialogue and reconcile with the aggrieved colleagues and their political party, opposition members to facilitate collaboration in the exercise of their fundamental mandates—lawmaking, oversight and representation, in the interest of peace, harmony and democracy of the country.

CISLAC would be happy to continue to provide support to the members of National Assembly to enhance efficiency in the conduct of the core legislative duties—lawmaking, oversight, representation and constituency outreach Signed:
 Auwal Ibrahim Musa (Rafsanjani)
 Executive Director, CISLAC

KEY ACHIEVEMENTS OF JONATHAN ADMINISTRATION DEMOCRACY AT WORK In response to the challenges of military dictatorship in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was formed by like-minded individuals to mobilize Nigerians to build a nation responsive to the aspirations of its people. In the past 15 years, the Peoples Democratic Party has been at the center of democratic governance in the country.  Within this numbers of years, many has attempted to discredited PDP government as not making any achievable impacts since 1999 but it is worthy to note   that the Party has deliver on its mandate in line with the vision of the founding fathers and its manifesto. From President Olusegun Obasanjo to the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua and now President Goodluck Jonathan administration, PDP had recorded landmark achievements in all sectors of the economy. From the onset, Obasanjo was able to attract technocrats and Nigerian expatriates to his administration...

EFREN PENAFLORIDA - SOCIAL WORKER AND TEACHER

Efren’s Penaflorida – Social Worker and Teacher Efren PeƱaflorida, Jr. sports no cape. He has no superpowers. You would neither throw him a second glance nor even notice him in a big crowd. There is really nothing special about Efren except his unparalleled dedication to reforming kids in their poverty-stricken community in Cavite, Philippines.Efren PeƱaflorida, Jr.’s sanity was questioned when people first saw him going around the neighborhood pushing his improvised cart loaded with food, books, paper, pencils, and other things you would commonly see in a classroom. Why, Efren goes around the neighborhood pushing a mobile classroom to peddle the love for education. He left his well-paying job as a private school teacher to devote all of his time and effort to his Kariton Klasrum project while his neighbors mock him.To make matters worse, his parents and brother did not see the point in his earnestness to get out-of-school youths interested in going back to school. For a family s...
