INCESSANT FLOODING IN UYO: ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION AS KEY

As an Environmental Engineer, i am constrained to point clearly that aside from the increasing demand for improved drainage structures in the state capital and its environs, that, human factors play key role in the current situation the state capital is faced with. I will love to stress some of these principal determinants as: poor sanitary conditions and increased population.
Over the years, there has been massive migration of people from rural areas to the state capital, as they seek for greener pastures. Similarly, there is a negative correlation between the exponetial population increase and existing facilities in the state capital, thus leading to increased waste generation.
In addition to the rural-urban drift, the state currently has no substantial environmental sanitation policy, as people dump waste indiscriminately in drainage channels. Some residence in Uyo, even go further to connect their sewage pipes and soak away pits to drainages, in the context of emptying waste water from their houses. This over time, accumulate and block drainage channels in the state capital and at the same time, led to severe environmental concerns. This attitude that has been in place for almost a decade, since the stoppage of the regular monthly sanitation in the state. Back in the days, residence were responsible for cleaning and clearing their drainage channels, particularly ones directly linked to their place of stay or environment, but the reverse is the case today.
Of the truth, the modified Green Brigade has done its best in this regard, but their activities and capacity is not enough to service a massive state capital like Uyo. It is very essential that, people should be allowed to help out in clearing drainages, thus a call for return monthly sanitation in the state.
I will do a full article on the subject in the next couple of days, with some recommendations as well on the part of the citizenry and Government at large. If you got ideas on how we can improve upon the situation, let's share together and come out with a position that will help Government to tackle the menace of flooding in the state capital.

EFREN PENAFLORIDA - SOCIAL WORKER AND TEACHER

Efren’s Penaflorida – Social Worker and Teacher Efren PeƱaflorida, Jr. sports no cape. He has no superpowers. You would neither throw him a second glance nor even notice him in a big crowd. There is really nothing special about Efren except his unparalleled dedication to reforming kids in their poverty-stricken community in Cavite, Philippines.Efren PeƱaflorida, Jr.’s sanity was questioned when people first saw him going around the neighborhood pushing his improvised cart loaded with food, books, paper, pencils, and other things you would commonly see in a classroom. Why, Efren goes around the neighborhood pushing a mobile classroom to peddle the love for education. He left his well-paying job as a private school teacher to devote all of his time and effort to his Kariton Klasrum project while his neighbors mock him.To make matters worse, his parents and brother did not see the point in his earnestness to get out-of-school youths interested in going back to school. For a family s...
