It was author Max Depree that says, “The first
responsibility of a leader is to define reality” and Tim Redmond in his
treatise submitted that, “There are many things that will catch my eye, but
there are only a few things that will catch my heart.” Those two submissions
are applicable to the Transition Chairman of Eket Local Government Area, Hon.
Frank Archibong. Few days after his inauguration by the Executive Governor of
Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, Hon. Frank didn’t waste time to make his
plan known to the good people of Eket LGA. He was quick to define his priority
of restoring the culture of cleanliness in Eket local government area by
embarking on an intensive environmental sanitation drive.

Like most politicians who made empty promises just to
solicit votes from the electorates and after assumption of office, they quickly
forget their promises and all accessibility to them proved abortive, but in the
case of Hon. Archibong, it is a different ball game entirely. After his
declaration to embark on intensive sanitation in Eket Urban City, he followed his
words with action with the Entriple C initiative to realize his set goals. For the
past few days, the Chairman has been in the field with his team following words
with actions. According to him, “I have faith, courage and enthusiasm that we
can keep our environment clean. Please be aware of your environmental
sanitation, security and safety. Clean your environment. A clean city starts
with you,” he submitted. This is a paradigm shift in the new administration of
Eket local government area as he even partner with a construction firm, Gitto
Construction Nigeria to fill the potholes that have littered the entire urban
roads in Eket LGA.
For those who are visitors and residents in Eket Urban City,
you will agree with me that there is no single accessible road in the entire Eket
local government area with intimidating potholes which has made vehicular
movement impossible and sometimes causes unwarranted hold-up within the city. Some
of the roads that need urgent attention are Eket Oron Road, Etebi Street, Udofa
Street, RCC Road, Uqua Road, Afaha Uqua Obokidim Road, Afaha Ukwa Road, Edem
Udo Street, Afaha Eket Road and adjoining streets, Enen Ekpene Roads and others
which need prompt attention by the State Government. The issue of potholes as
witnessed in Eket Urban City is as a result of engagement of incompetent
contractors to execute road projects who always compromised the design and
specification during execution. Some part of East West Road handle by Gitto
Construction is a case study. The funny thing is that those who should speak
out and confront such development sometimes keep mute and watch from the
sideline.
As a leader, it is very necessary to prioritize the three Rs
of requirement, return and reward. For a leader to be effective, he must order
his life according to the three priority area of what is required, what gives
the greatest return and what brings the greatest reward? With Hon. Frank
Archibong on the saddle of leadership of Eket local government area, there is a
greater expectation from the people with his new policy drive against what was
obtainable in the past. What the people of Eket need to do is to give him the
necessary support and cooperation to restore the dignity and pride of Ekid
people by giving the local government area a facelift in line with the mandate
of his office. Other things will be in place in due season.
