COMMUNIQUE OF AKWA IBOM STATE PDP STAKEHOLDERS MEETING

A COMMUNIQUE ISSUED AT THE END OF A MEETING OF ELDERS AND STAKEHOLDERS OF THE PEOPLES DEMOCRATIC PARTY, PDP, AKWA IBOM STATE, AT THE STATE PARTY SECRETARIAT, TUESDAY, JANUARY 5, 2016

The elders and stakeholders of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Akwa Ibom State, during a meeting to deliberate on issues of importance to the party in the State and particularly recent spate of falsehood propagated by opposition elements, have agreed to continue the pursuit of democracy, justice and equity in all its ramifications and to ensure good governance and growth of our state in particular and Nigeria in general, resolved as follows:

That we reaffirm our stand on the election of His Excellency, Mr Udom Emmanuel as the Governor of Akwa Ibom State through the mandate that was freely and overwhelmingly given to him by the people of the State during the gubernatorial election of April 11, 2015.

That we stand by the decision of the people of Akwa Ibom State who after series of Town Hall Meetings across the 10 Federal Constituencies, unanimously advocated the zoning of the office of Governor of Akwa Ibom State in 2015 to Eket Senatorial District – the district having NOT produced a Governor since the creation of the State 28 years ago.

3. That in giving the mandate to Eket Senatorial District, the party noted that as the largest district in the state with 12 local government areas, and indeed the oil-bearing district providing the wealth of the state and to a large extent, the nation, Eket Senatorial District should be allowed to produce the governor in order to ensure equity, justice and fairness.

4. That it was on the premise above that 20 out of the 24 aspirants of the party emerged from Eket senatorial district to vie for the governorship position in the primaries of November 2014, leading to the emergence of Mr. Udom Emmanuel as the flag-bearer of the party. This was followed by the massive victory of Governor Udom Emmanuel at the governorship election where he polled 996,071 to defeat other political parties including the APC which scored 89, 865.

5. That the elders and stakeholders have noted the verdict of the Appeal Court, but still remain confident in the Nigerian judiciary as the hope of the common man, believing that the Supreme Court still offers an opportunity for justice to be served to our people. If we may ask, is it not the same Court of Appeal that upheld the election of 21 out of 26 House of Assembly members held on April 11, by the same electoral officials simultaneously with the governorship election? How then did the same Court of Appeal turn around to nullify the governorship election?

6. That we condemn in its entirety the spate of lies and falsehood bandied by some mischievous elements on the true situation of things in Akwa Ibom State and wish to state that Akwa Ibom State people are peace-loving people who have faith in the Divine Mandate freely given to His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel.

7. We wish to restate our commitment to the success of the Divine Mandate and assure Akwa Ibom people and all Nigerians, that the PDP remains a religion and a tradition in the state.

8. That we condemn in strong terms the inciting statements by some elements that they will take Akwa Ibom State by all means – hook or crook. We however wish to remind them that Akwa Ibom State is not for sale, lease or hire purchase; they are advised to focus on elections and producing leaders in their respective states.

9. That we are aware of plans hatched by some elements within the APC to use the security agencies to hound, harass, intimidate, detain and or imprison some leaders of PDP in the State as a satanic strategy to emasculate the potency of the party in the State in case of any governorship re-run.

10. That the elders and stakeholders call on President Buhari to caution his party members against reckless utterances and undemocratic tendencies that may not augur well for the growth and sustenance of peace and unity of our nation.

11. That the elders and stakeholders unanimously pass a vote of confidence on His Excellency, Governor Udom Emmanuel and commend him for the spectacular achievements recorded by his administration in the past seven months. We also commend the Senate Minority Leader, Senator Godswill Akpabio, CON, and the entire members of the National Assembly who are all PDP for the quality of representation and commitment to the ideals of democracy and the growth of the party.

Finally, we as elders and stakeholders in Akwa Ibom State, firmly reiterate to continue to work for the success of the party in all fronts, and will continue to support our leader and Governor His Excellency Mr. Udom Emmanuel to continue to deliver sound economic programmes and projects for the betterment of the lives of our people.

AKWA IBOM CHILD RIGHTS LAW

The Akwa Ibom State Child Rights Law The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Godswill Akpabio, on 5th December, 2008 signed the child rights act into law to protect the growth of perceptual, emotional, intellectual, and behavioural capabilities and functioning during childhood of Akwa Ibom children under 16 years.
