PRESIDENT BUHARI VIOLATION OF THE RULE OF LAW IS AN ABUSE OF OFFICE AND SHOULD BE CHECKMATE BY THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
By Ubong David
For those who see me as against President Muhammadu Buhari or his policies, they all got it wrong because it is either they are ignorant of what I stand for or they did it out of their own volition to score cheap political point. Like I have always say and will say it even before the President himself that I didn't support him and have no reason to have supported him. But for the fact that he emerged the winner of the last presidential election, he remain my president and will support his policies and programs provided it entertain the interests, yearnings and aspirations of all Nigerians irrespective of religion, region or sexual connotation.
In as far as I support Mr. President, I will not also fail to raise my voice when he erred. While my Party, the Peoples Democratic Party was totally condemning the entire Budget as presented by Mr. President, I didn't fully support it because my interest was in education which the 2016 Budget paid more premium on. Though, I am not an economist but from a layman point of view, I was satisfied with some areas of the Budget and disagree with some areas. I belong to Nigeria first before a political party. The PDP as an opposition party and other Nigerians has the right to criticize the programs and policies of this government especially in areas that contrary to the wishes of Nigerians.
I will go down with Buhari on total removal of fuel subsidy to save Nigerians from the whims and caprices of oil barons and cabals who has systematically kept our country at where we are today. It is the activities of the cabals that make our refineries not to functions despite series of TAM gulping billions of dollars but all to drain pipes.
Today, I lend my voice again to condemn the abuses of the Rule of Law by President Buhari by still keeping Col Sambo Dasuki and Nnamdi Kanu in detention till date even with subsisting court orders. Mr. President during his inauguration pledged to uphold the Constitution which is the highest instrument of our land.
President Buhari is just the head of the Executive arm of government and cannot supritend on other arms like the Legislature and Judiciary. He has no right whatsoever to continue to detain Col. Dasuki, Nnamdi Kanu and the recent arrest of PDP spokesperson, Chief Olisa Metuh. These men are all Nigerians and if they are wanting in any way, they should be charged to court accordingly. It is ridiculous and chameleonic that the same people that approached the court for an order to arrest Dasuki has also refused to grant him bail and others in their captivity. The rule of law must be follow to the later. The president has no right to select which court order to obey. I have said this before and will continue to say it that what we are witnessing today in the country is impunity in every sense of the word which this same people were complaining about the last administration.
I therefore call on the National Assembly to rise up to the occasion as the bastion of democracy to check the excesses of President Buhari administration's before it throw the country into another Rwanda. The right of Nigerians are guarantee by the Constitution and it is amount to abuse of office for the President to use state officials to infringe on those rights. The rule of law must take its course. For my friends who are citing several examples while the President cannot obey every law, I hereby refer you to the Constitution. Read it and get understanding because the rule of law is a constitutional provision and cannot be violated by state agents. We should not promote illegality is a country that is well guided by the law of the land.
