WOMEN GENDER EQUALITY: A COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY
Today, the global community mark the United Nations International Women
Day with the theme: PLANET 50-50 BY 2030: STEP IT UP FOR GENDER
EQUALITY aim to achieve Goal 5 of Sustainable Development Goals of the
United Nations. It is very sympathetic that while other countries are
strengthening campaign and advocacy for the right of women and girl
child as equal partner in development effort, our country is witnessing
the highest abuses of human right with the killing, miaming and
abduction of girl child.
The Ese Oruru's abduction, the kidnapping and
gruesome murder of Ezinne Ann Nwachukwu, the abduction of over 200 girls
at Chibok, the rape of innocent girls especially minor, the marriage of
underage girls, the formation of baby factories and other human right
abuses are aim at denying the women equal right as their men
counterpart. Inspite of these unfortunate circumstances, the women of
Nigeria have risen above their challenges to make meaningful
contributions to the social, economic and political development of our
country.
As the world marks International Women Day today, we at Eagle Builders Foundation lend our voices with world leaders, international organizations especially the United Nations, human rights groups, development partners, corporate organizations and the media to support the achievement of Gender Equality among men and women as equal partners in advancing the cause of humanity. We reiterated our commitment for the education of the girl child and therefore call on the domestication of Child Rights Law in all states of the federation. We urge all wives of state governors in Nigeria to partner with CSOs to embark on programs and activities that will encourage and promote the right of women especially the girl child in their respective states. We are convinced that with such programs, effort to achieve Planet 50-50 by 2030 will be achieve.
Finally, we plead with our men folk especially the political class to give more women opportunities in both elected and appointed positions in govenance so as to advance the cause of women and contribute their quota to the development of our country. We celebrate with women across the globe and wish them a successful 2016 International Women Day Celebration.
