EAGLE BUILDERS FOUNDATION CALLS SOUTH AFRICAN TO STOP XENOPHOBIA

16th April, 2015

Press Release

ZENOPHOBIA IN SOUTH AFRICA: NIGERIANS TAKEN FOR GRANTED

Our attention has been drawn to recent attack by South African on foreigners killing a score of them on the ground that they are responsible for the high unemployment rate of 24% in their country. As at yesterday by 10.00am, it was reported that a group of South African students killed 5 Congolese, 10 Nigerians, 5 Gabonese and 10 Somalis in Johannesburg. This action is very unfortunate, barbaric and absurd and therefore should be condemn in its entirety.

South African are very ungrateful human beings for embarking on killing innocent citizens of other countries especially Nigerians which they hate with passion for no just cause. South African government has been antagonizing Nigeria for a long time now especially on issue of permanent membership of the United Nations. They forget so soon the sacrifices that Nigeria made in rescue their country and return it to democracy during the Apartheid era. Nigeria offered many of them political asylum which they now pay back with hate and killing of innocent Nigerians. The xenophobia in the city of Durban which was fuelled by King Zulu was directly targeted on Nigerians while foreigners of other countries are only victims of circumstances. We frown at a situation where security agencies who suppose to maintain law and order are laughing at a scene where innocent citizens of other countries are burn alive.

It is rather unfortunate that while South African businesses like MTN, DSTV and other big conglomerates are flourishing in Nigeria with outright violations of court ruling on high tariffs, Nigerians are killed in their own country for going about doing their lawful businesses. This is a breach of the cordial relationship that has existed among the two countries since the return of South Africa to democracy. We want to tell South African government to call their citizens who are fun of taking the laws into their hands by killing innocent citizens of other countries to refrain from such act as no single country is independent of rascality. Any further brutal attack on citizens of other countries especially Nigeria will ignite a reprisal which South African government and its citizens will suffer the hardest consequences.

We therefore call on Nigerian government to rise up to the occasion to ensure that its citizens in other countries are protected while we also call on South African government to put every machineries in motion to stop any future occurrence. We must guide against any breach of the cordial relationship that has been existed between the two countries in time past and urge the African Union and ECOWAS to take a bold step to address this anomaly.

Enough is enough. Let xenophobia be bury for life in South Africa for good.

ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION AWARENESS PROGRAM (ESAP) - The culture of cleanliness is fast eroding and that is why people littered the street, dump refuse indiscriminately and take delight in activities inimical to the well-being of the environment. Gutters and culverts are converted into refuse dumps emitting offensive odour capable of annihilating the entire population should an epidemic break out. Improper management of waste triggers severe environmental and health problems in our society. The majority of diseases we experienced today are partly due to the failure to dispose of garbage correctly. These have resulted in many devastating diseases such as dysentery, diarrhea, scabies, typhoid and malaria becoming widespread among our communities.

Sustainability of a healthy and conducive environment has taken a key point on the 8 Points Agenda of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) thereby giving government, individuals and organizations the mandate of ensuring adequate policies that will aim toward the enhancements of good and healthy environment for the well-being of the public.

Environmental Sanitation is said to be activities aimed at improving or maintaining the standard of basic environmental conditions affecting the well-being of people. Therefore, ESAP is an idea developed to promote the improvement of good environmental sanitation in Nigeria. These conditions include:
• Clean and safe water supply
• Clean and safe ambient air
• Efficient and safe animal, human and industrial waste disposal
• Protection of food from biological and chemical contaminants and
• Adequate housing in clean and safe surroundings also known as environmental hygiene.

If we must achieve these environmental conditions, we must bear in mind that the individuals, private organizations, government (agencies) and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) must join hands together, working toward ensuring the well-being of the people in other to actualize this goal. It has been a great passion of our organization to see Akwa Ibom State as one of the notable states in Nigeria in the achievement of POINT 7 of the Millennium Development Goals through adequate provision of healthy and conducive environment for the people of Akwa Ibom State.

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES OF ENVIRONMENTAL SANITATION AWARENESS PROGRAMS
