AFAHA EKET OLD STUDENTS REUNITES, LAUNCHES N15M REHABILITATION PROJECT

It was celebration galore as old students of Government Secondary School (GSS) Afaha Eket Alumni Association met yesterday at a Reunion Dinner held at Villa Marina Hotels in Eket to chart the way forward for that citadel of learning.

In his welcome speech, the President of the Alumni Association, Rt. Hon. David Lawrence said that the association has provided old students of the institution opportunity to reconnect together with their former school and classmates both senior and junior students. 

Rt. Hon. Lawrence who is the Deputy Chief Whip and Member representing Eket State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly expressed delight in the height that the Association has attained within its two years existence, stating that school reunion globally is an opportunities to relive the fanciful memories of childhood and a period of nostalgic reflections and reconnections.

Rt. Hon. Lawrence listed some of the achievements of the Alumni within two years of its existence to include registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) as a legal entity, initiated Award and Sponsorship Programmes which has so far attracted 30 sponsorship among its members and non-members, partnership with Alrange Group to sponsor a Mentorship and Career Counselling Workshop for students of the alma mater and surrounding schools. He noted that Scholarship Awards will be included in subsequent edition of the programme.

 He also stated that the official website of the Alumni Association is at advance stage to help members communicate easily and serves as linkages for members and intending members as it will help them to enroll and upload their personal data and make donations and payment online.
However, Rt. Hon. Lawrence expressed regret that the Rehabilitation Project which was estimated at N15 million has not received the support of members as was expected due to downturn in the economy of the nation and lack of engagement by members. He said that the rehabilitation project is the main focus of the Association and strongly appealed to members to make commitment to the project.


“We cannot claim to be oblivious of the general state of affairs in the country but we are determined to make a difference,” he emphasized. He called on all members of the Alumni to joined hands together in adding value to their alma mater.

In his welcome speech, the Chairman of the Occasion and the Vice Chairman, Board of Trustees of the Alumni Association, Barr Akpadiaha Ebitu said that the Reunion has provided members the opportunities to meet their school and classmates and share thought together toward the development of their alma mater. He therefore called on members to make handsome donations toward the rehabilitation project as the school has assumed an embarrassing situation. Barr. Akpadiaha extended invitation to other old students to identify with the Association as more can be achieved by the Association.

Edidiong Umoetuk appealed for members to invest more in encouraging othere so as to produce more professionals from the school. Owoidighe Adiakpan in his contribution advocated for members not to leave the works of rebuilding their alma mater into the hands of government but to be committed in ensuring that they add value to the institution that made them who they are today.

Barr. Inam Wilson, a Lagos Based Legal Practitioner said that they have to explore all their networks to achieve greater height as information and knowledge is very key.

The Principal of Government Secondary School, Mr. Godwin J. Ekong thanked the Alumni Association for such a good gesture to organized the Graduation/Prize Giving Ceremony saying that it is a moral boost to the students education. He commended the organizers of the Award Ceremony and rated the Alumni Association as one of the best in the country. He appealed for more support to the school to give it a facelift.

There was presentations by students from the school who also appealed to the Alumni Association to support them financially in ensuring that their creative prowess does not end at the school.

The Reunion Dinner with the theme: REBUILDING FOR GROWTH launched a N15 million Rehabilitation Project which was facilitated by the Secretary of the Alumni, Mr. Aniekan Willie. In attendance were Paschal Francis, Engr. Ekerette Usak, SSA to the Governor, Kennedy Akwaowo, Mr. Sam Ekpenyong, Chief Usoro I. Usoro and Barr. Inam Wilson.

Others are Barr. Ben and Lydia Udowa, Secretary of BoT, Aniekan Etuk, Edidiong Umoetuk, Joy Abakasanga and others.

AKWA IBOM CHILD RIGHTS LAW

The Akwa Ibom State Child Rights Law The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Obong Godswill Akpabio, on 5th December, 2008 signed the child rights act into law to protect the growth of perceptual, emotional, intellectual, and behavioural capabilities and functioning during childhood of Akwa Ibom children under 16 years.
